Preceptorship Program
Executive Summary
The preceptorship program is designed to address the growing educational needs in the field of hematology oncology in the Asia-Pacific region. The rising incidence of regional cancer, morbidity, and mortality demands integration of novel diagnostic and therapeutic agents into the treatment armamentarium. The Preceptorship Program will offer educational rotations at the leading educational universities to selected individuals under guidance of APHCON MENTORS. The preceptorship program will leverage academic partnerships among leading educational universities and hospitals to solidify a unified healthcare community that is committed to using the leading research and technology in hematology oncology. DR. HONG-BING MA from SICHUAN UNIVERSITY, CHINA is the first recipient of the APHCON Preceptorship Award. Application deadline: Closed for the current cycle. Applications will become available for submission on August 25, 2013 for the next funding cycle. Objectives There is strong support for providing an educational vehicle that will share clinical knowledge and promote the shared goal of improving and standardizing cancer care in the Asia-Pacific region. The preceptorship program will address this collective desire to enhance of clinical practices in Asia. The main objectives are: 1. Provide invaluable educational opportunity and mentorship program for faculty and fellows in training in the APAC region 2. Cultivation of well-trained physicians to excel in terms of patient care, disease management, and clinical research 3. Identify talented junior faculty who will benefit from career development program to grow into independent principal investigator 4. Provide infrastructure support for grant writing and manuscript preparation 5. Provide exposure to complete spectrum of challenges in clinical research including clinical trial design and protocol development The preceptorship program gives the visiting fellow the opportunity to receive an exceptional educational experience as well as gain familiarity with the novel agents. This will give them more confidence to run clinical trials in their own country. Program Detail Exceptional applicants will be recruited via the Asia Pacific Hematology Consortium (APHCON) and will enter 6 week rotation at one of the leading institutions of choice. During each rotation, the candidate will observe mentoring physicians, contribute to the journal club, observe diagnostic laboratories, and participate in institutional grand rounds. The candidate will also have hands on training in managing side effects of novel therapeutics, dose adjustments and change of therapy. Each candidate will be assigned to a preceptor who will be responsible for the candidate’s activities and educational experience. The preceptor will spend minimum designated time per week with the candidate and evaluate the candidate after completion of the program. At the end of the rotation, candidates will receive a formal certificate indicating their successful completion of the curriculum and will be termed as Clinical Scholars. The Clinical Scholars will provide progress updates at 6 month and on yearly basis. Clinical Scholars will also be invited to participate in the local APHCON chapters and annual meetings. |
